SABOS members have generously agreed to support “project prom jewelry” in which we will make and donate jewelry for teens whose foster parents can not afford prom dresses and accessories. The prom dress program is sponsored by the Preparing for Adult Living project of Child Protective Services in San Antonio. Member at Large Denise Moreland suggested the project, since she works for Adult Protective Services and saw a need for jewelry to complete the prom attire. Last year more than 100 young women were able to select dresses and shoes in the annual event, but there was not enough jewelry to go around. Representatives of the program explained the program at the October SABOS meeting. They are supervisor Nadine Terry and PAL coordinators Dawn Ramirez and Cherelle Herber. This is an opportunity for SABOS members to share their unique talents with young San Antonio women…and help them feel like princesses when they go to the prom. We’ll be collecting prom dresses for the late March event, but more importantly, well make and donate jewelry. Our February general meeting will be “Beading for a Cause.” You can bring dresses and finished pieces for donation, and we’ll be making jewelry as the meeting activity. Start collecting your shiny, glitzy beads and components. It will be a fun night of beading together. Julia Kearney and Denise Moreland are co-chairing this project and will be available to pick up jewelry, dresses or supplies if members are not able to make the February meeting. This will be a great follow up to our participation in the San Antonio Food Bank’s Harvest of Hope fundraiser, when we were able to donate more than $1,000 in jewelry. If you have specific questions about the CPS prom project…or have suggestions on other sources of support for CPS, feel free to contact Nadine Terry at
